Before doing any online shopping or online banking, make sure your computer is protected and updated. Here are some tips that will help you to have safer online transactions:
-
Install Windows updates. Keep your computer updated by installing all Windows updates. To do this, run Windows Update from the Start menu programs. Two popular applications that should also be updated regularly are Adobe Reader and Adobe Flash. You can download the latest versions from the Adobe website.
-
Install antivirus security software. Your computer should have antivirus, antispyware and antispam protection. Make sure your current security software is working and updated. If you need to purchase new security software, I recommend Trend Micro Internet Security or Kaspersky Internet Security.
-
Make sure your computer is not infected. Once you are sure that your antivirus software is working and updated, run a complete virus scan to make sure your computer is not infected with any viruses.
-
Use an updated and secure web browser.
A web browser with security features can alert you when you are about to visit a fraudulent or dangerous website. I recommend to use Firefox as your web browser. Firefox checks all the websites you are about to visit and blocks any dangerous websites. You can download the latest version from the Firefox website.
-
Beware of fake emails. Ignore any emails asking you to update your passwords or any other personal information. Normally, legitimate companies don't ask for this information by email. Also, be careful of email promotions that sound too good to be true or any unsolicited emails. Don't click on any links in these emails because it may take you to a fake website. If you want to visit a website, open your web browser and type in the website address.
-
Check the security of websites. If you are about to process credit card information through a website, make sure of the following:
-
There is an “s” after http on the website address. It should read https, not http.
- There is a small closed yellow padlock in the address bar or at the lower right corner of your web browser
I hope these tips can help you to enjoy online transactions and web browsing safely. If you need to have your computer security checked, please schedule an appointment for a free estimate.
